USDA’s Interactive “Know Your Farmer” Guide Supports Local Food Movement

The number of farmers’ markets in the U.S. has doubled since 1998, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). To support the popular “locavore” movement to grow and buy locally raised farm products, USDA launched its Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative in 2009. The program supports local and regional food systems and offers resources to help strengthen theKnow Your Farmer Know Your Food Compass cover connection between farmers and consumers.

“I think it’s important to know where your food is coming from these days,” said Arabella Juarez, visual project manager at USDA. “It’s important that you know how your food is being handled, how far it has traveled and where it’s been before it hits your market or grocery store.”

To serve as a guide to the USDA’s resources, the agency published the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass—a multi-media interactive PDF. Designed by OmniStudio, the guide features case studies, images and videos illustrating the USDA’s work in local food infrastructure, farm to institution, careers in agriculture, and healthy food access. You can take a look at the Compass here.

The Compass has received national attention, including a mention on NPR’s website that discussed how the Know Your Farmer Know Your Food initiative leads to job creation.
