Take A Tour of the National Woman’s Party Home with New Mobile App

Almost a century ago, the Sewall-Belmont House on Capitol Hill served as the headquarters for the National Woman’s Party (NWP)—an early activist group that fought tirelessly for the rights of women, especially women’s suffrage, in the United States.

Today, it serves as a reminder of the struggles of women and the progress that has been made, due in large part to the members of the NWP, who dedicated their lives to the cause.

The NWP’s legacy will now live on in today’s digital world with the house museum’s newly released mobile tour application on iTunes.

“We recognize that people use the web and mobile devices as the primary resource for finding information, and travelers are utilizing apps and portable resources to help guide and direct their travel,” said Elisabeth Crum, Public Programs & Outreach Manager at Sewall-Belmont House & Museum (SBHM). “We felt that it was important to offer visitors an additional tool that would enhance their onsite visit and allow them to tour virtually as well.”

In the app—which was designed by OmniStudio and developed by Citrrus—detailed descriptions accompany high-resolution images of artifacts, photographs and furniture. Whether they are visiting from the comfort of their homes or using the app as they tour the museum, visitors get a visually rich introduction to the Sewall-Belmont House and its historical collections.

Crum said that the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum app is helping researchers find information for papers and other scholarly works. Assistants and guides are using the app to share more content with museum visitors. Fans of the museum from afar can now have a first-hand view of the house and collections.

“We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback and responses to the app. Users love the format and content and the design is aesthetically pleasing,” Crum said.

Other House museums have taken interest in the new app, Crum said, and have asked SBHM to share feedback on its success.

“This mobile app allows Sewall-Belmont to reach and engage a broader global audience that may not have heard of us or may not be able to travel,” Crum said.
