CPSC’s Pool Safely Website Works to Educate and Save Lives

Millions of Americans swim in public and residential pools each year, but all too often a fun afternoon by the pool can turn tragic.

To improve the safety of such a popular pastime, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched Pool Safely, a national public education campaign about pool and spa safety, supported by the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. CPSC chose OmniStudio to develop a state-of-the art website that could effectively and interactively engage its diverse body of constituents, which includes families, state and local officials, industry professionals and the media.

OmniStudio provided CPSC with a website that can effectively and interactively engage its diverse body of constituents with pool and spa safety issues.

“PoolSafely.gov is the one-stop resource for information on preventing pool and spa drownings and entrapment incidents. The site reaches out to a diverse audience from parents and industry leaders to state and local officials. Personal stories and content, including educational videos for children and adults, all work together to promote safety and save lives,” said Kathleen Reilly, public affairs specialist at CPSC.

Designed with the audience in mind, the Pool Safely site features a tab for each group of constituents, organizing audience-specific information into attractive, easy-to-navigate categories.

Built on a WordPress content management system platform, the site allows CPSC to update content with ease to present the public with the most current information. The site is also integrated with Twitter, Flickr and YouTube feeds to further broadcast the Pool Safely message to its wide array of constituents through various channels.

“CPSC now has a powerful tool to disseminate campaign-related information through better usability, use of images, artwork, audio/video, and a wider variety of page layouts that provide ongoing flexibility and scalability,” said Russ Chettiar, OmniStudio’s senior Web producer/information architect. “The site now reaches all potential audience groups.”

In addition to the website, Omni also produced the visual and print collateral materials for the extensive public awareness campaign created by Widmeyer Communications. The collateral materials for the campaign, produced in both English and Spanish, include the Pool Safely logo, pull-up trade show banners, brochures, a comprehensive toolkit, flyers, posters, point-of-purchase display stands, stickers, fans, sunglasses, door hangers, and temporary tattoos. Pool Safely.gov will soon feature an interactive animated game developed by Omni for children, featuring characters “Splish” and “Splash,” to help reinforce pool safety.
